1000 Rep Challenge

You may have heard of the 10,000-hour rule which states if you put in 10,000 hours you can become an expert in any given field. It is believed that the Beatles put in 10,000 hours of practice to become the great band that we know today. As well it is said that Bill Gates put in 10,000 hours of programming before, he ever developed the infamous company Microsoft.

This month First Choice Martial Arts would like to challenge our students to perform 1000 reps of any kick of their choice. Although this is not the 10,000 hours rule it is a good step in the right direction to building good technique and progress with a kick of your choice.

One thing that is rarely mentioned in the 10,000 hours rule is good hours versus bad hours. Sure, if you put 10,000 hours in of sloppy work and rush through your techniques you will not become an expert in any given field. It takes consistent, disciplined, and methodical practice to become great at any skill that you set out to tackle. So, make sure you take your time and put in the required work to make this worth your time.

Furthermore, when you perform your 1000 reps this month it will not be about rushing through the techniques as fast as you can. We encourage you to slowly break them down and perform them with the utmost precision. This is designed to help you really build in that muscle memory so that when it is time to perform at a higher caliber you can do so.

Use the month of August to challenge yourself and don’t think that the 1000 rep challenge is just limited to karate. I’m sure there are many things in life where we can all apply the discipline of doing 1000 reps to make for greater success and achievements.

As Anthony Robin states remember, “Repetition is the mother of all skill.”
